Music box, ナンパ box, big-room, small-room — what's the difference?

How Tokyo people categorize clubs internally — music box, nampa box, big room, small room, DJ bar — and why it matters for your night.

People in the Tokyo scene throw around terms like “music box,” “ナンパ (nampa) box,” “big room,” “small room.” First time you hear it, you have no idea what’s being said. Here’s the decoder.

Big-room / small-room is capacity

The most basic split is size:

Big room — 500+ capacity. International DJ visits, VIP culture, champagne calls, multi-floor. Tickets 5,000+ yen. Powerful when it works, expensive overall.

Mid room — 200-500 capacity. Balanced.

Small room — 50-200 capacity. Forestlimit, Bonobo, mogra, OATH, Ruby Room and similar. Where Tokyo’s local DJ scene actually lives. Lower entry, deep music, resident DJ presence.

This site (tonight’s index) is almost entirely small and mid rooms.

Music box vs nampa box is character

Independent of size, the night’s character matters:

Music box (音箱) — people came for the music. Techno, house, bass-heavy scenes. Floor is focused, conversation is minimal.

ナンパ box (nampa = “pickup”) — pickup-and-flirt is the foreground. Gendered pricing (free / discounted for women), pop-leaning music, conversation-heavy floor, photos OK, weekend casual crowd.

The same venue can swing between modes depending on the night. The signal is the organizer, the music, and the pricing structure.

If you’re going for music, picking a music night is the move. If you go to a ナンパ night expecting to lose yourself in deep techno, you’ll be wrong-footed.

DJ bars are a separate tree

DJ bar — bar with a DJ playing. Capacity 20-50, often no proper floor, counter-focused, volume low enough to talk, drinks paid at the bar (sometimes with a small charge), conversation friendly. Bonobo, Aoyama Tunnel, Bridge Shibuya / Shinjuku, Asagaya DRIFT, Doctor Head, etc.

DJ bars are the gateway for people who find clubs too much. Same music tradition, lower stakes (DJ bar vs club).

Cross-table

Choose by intent. “Bath in sound” → music box. “Big international DJ” → big room. “Music + conversation” → DJ bar. “Loud social night” → nampa box if that’s what you want.
